Participatory Media – Surveying the Field in 2008
March 27-28, 2008

Pulitzer Center Executive Director Jon Sawyer is participating in the March 27-29 Media Re:Public forum hosted by the USC Annenberg School for Communication. Journalists, researchers and executives will gather at the forum to assess the evolving role of participatory media and discuss future possibilities for collaboration between traditional and new information channels.

When entering our Justice and Peace Studies class this past January, many of my classmates were excited about the prospect of learning various human rights and social justice theories. However, more than simply teaching us about the academic prospects associated with nonprofit work, Professor Rachel Stohl wanted us to get a hands-on approach to the field of Justice and Peace, starting with participating in the Pulitzer Center's Global Gateway initiative.

Loretta Tofani's "American Imports, Chinese Deaths" series was awarded, among others, the 2007 Investigative Reporters and Editors' Gold Medal for medium sized newspapers.

"Heroes of HIV: HIV in the Caribbean" reporter Antigone Barton will participate in the "Mobilizing and Engaging Communities for Global Health" Conference at Indiana University during March 29-30.

The conference, which is hosted by Americans for Informed Democracy, seeks to raise awareness amongst the younger population about international health issues such as AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria as well as inspire students to strive for policy solutions.

OneWorld.net highlights the Pulitzer Center's ongoing "Water Wars: Ethiopia and Kenya" reporting project on February 28 in the Today's News section of its website. The project, conducted by the young journalists of the Common Language Project, addresses the increasing scarcity of water in East Africa and how the shortage is fueling conflict in the region.
